Graphics Cards are not made for gamers anymore!

Its the primary processor for Machine Learning and AI applications

I read some of the comments made for the Nvidia release for RTX 4090, 4080. A lot of the comments and posts are converging on the same sentiment that these cards are just too expensive for the games, which got me thinking.

I am just a very novice and casual gamer. I play on weekends mostly from the range of retro games as well as all the new AAA graphics heavy games. I have a RTX 2060 super card and a 2K display which I really enjoy. To my surprise this 4 or 5 years old card still doesn’t make me feel like I need to upgrade it. Along with i7–9700K, this machine is just perfect for any casual gamer I think.

I believe that the moment that Nvidia shifted to enable RTX cores in their graphics card was the moment that they knew who is the actual consumer of this product category. They are not the gamers, they were people who want to use graphics card as the primary processing unit for executing the type of computations that no CPU can perform in the given time. These are the type of computations that miners have been doing since the inception of cryptocurrency boom and now them going away, Data scientists and big enterprises are the one of the biggest consumers now of those GPUs and those are the ones who are going to pay whatever amount Nvidia is going to price them at because the upside of these processors outweighs even the cost of these highly priced GPUs by order of magnitudes.

You cannot run these so called neural networks and other data models on a CPU and even the other GPU makers doesn’t even come close to these publicly available RTX cores for machine learning tasks and that is what I think Nvidia has in mind.

Anyways, I just don’t see any game maker or designer launching a game that’s specifically going to need these cards anyways and I don’t think Nvidia is too worried about the games anyways. They see a better high paying customer who is going to pay them for decades to come in multiples of what gamers are going to pay for the high end cards. Its also not like they are not doing anything for the games. They will likely release RTX 4050 and RTX 4060 cards for the gamers at lower prices but of course more than the price of RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 which I think they should because of the generational improvements.

If you are a casual gamer or play just for enjoying the games, believe me, even without testing the highest end cards are an overkill for the sleeping games makers. If you want the highest end performance for your work or earning money even from games, RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 16GB is for you.

That’s all for today. Live long and prosper.
